Mason Mount has spoken for the first time after scoring the winner for Chelsea against Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Chelsea found it hard to break through against a 10-man Fulham but they finally got the breakthrough and what turned out to be the winner when Mason Mount found the bottom corner with a brilliant half-volley with 12 minutes to go.
The win was much needed for Frank Lampard ‘s men after picking up just one league win in six games, while Fulham came into this one having not lost in five.
“Yeah, it was a massive game for us,” said match-winner Mount after the game to Sky Sports. “We know the run we’ve been through recently, it’s been tough and we’ve had to really look at ourselves.
“It was good to get the win against Morecambe, that was a kind of step to getting wins under our belt again and obviously today, it was a tough, tough game and we had to wait until late in the second-half to get a goal.
“It’s been tough, we’ve had to dig deep as a team, all together, we’ve been together through it all and shown great character throughout tonight.”
Asked about the pressure on Chelsea heading into the game, Mount added: “We all knew that we needed a win, we all put the pressure on ourselves.
“There’s definitely pressure on us to perform, if you look at the changing room, and the quality we have in it, we know we need to win games.
“It’s been difficult over the last couple of weeks, but we put the pressure on ourselves to turn up and win tonight. Yeah, we’re very pleased with that.”
Mount seemed to take up a different position before going on to score his goal, dropping deeper after the introduction of Tammy Abraham and Callum Hudson-Odoi.
“Jorgi [Jorginho] went off, so I dropped a bit deeper,” Mount said of the change. “(We) Brought Tam (Abraham) on, Timo (Werner), so I dropped a bit deeper, but I was in there with Kov [Mateo Kovacic] and that allowed me to go forward and then I found myself in the box, which recently I’ve not been doing, I haven’t been getting in the box as much.
“That’s something I managed to do today and it fell to me, and I probably should have had two as well.”
