Kevin Owens Returns, Will Face Roman Reigns At Royal Rumble

Adam Pearce facilitated the return of his old friend Kevin Owens, and gave him another shot at the Universal Championship.

It all went down on the most recent edition of SmackDown.

The show closed with Adam Pearce and Roman Reigns signing the contract that would make their match at Royal Rumble official. But like a true pro wrestling veteran, Pearce had an ace up his sleeve.

The WWE official “injured” himself while walking back up the ramp after signing the contract. And so a replacement was required.

Enter KO, who made his first appearance on SmackDown since being thrown through a table by Roman Reigns a few weeks ago.

Adam Pearce then confirmed that Kevin Owens would face Roman Reigns in a Last Man Standing Match for the Universal Championship at Royal Rumble.

As you might recall, it was Pearce who initially “earned” a shot at Roman’s Universal Championship on last week’s SmackDown.

The show closed with the gauntlet match to determine the number one contender. Pearce — who was participating in his first match in six ears — was the last man to enter. His opponent was Shinsuke Nakamura, who had already beaten Rey Mysterio, Baron Corbin, and Daniel Bryan.

Before Pearce made his way to the ring, Roman, Heyman, and Jey Uso appeared. Jey attacked Nakamura, and Roman joined in. Jey then super kicked Pearce and pulled him on top of Nakamura’s unconscious body so the referee could count the pin. Pearce was declared the winner of the match.
