Ricky Simon has an opportunity to turn heads if he can pull off a strong victory at UFC Fight Island 8.
Mixed martial arts action is set to pick up in 2021 as the UFC travels back to Fight Island for a series of upcoming events. These cards feature top tier competitors across multiple weight classes. But some still fall under the radar as fights that deserve crack analysis, predictions and talking points. Ricky Simon, set to fight at UFC Fight Island 8, is one of those individuals and is the focal point of this edition of Fighter to Watch.
The 28-year old Simon is scheduled to welcome Gaetano Pirrello into the Octagon. Simon was originally scheduled for an important bout against Brian Kelleher but thanks to COVID-19 that fight was scrapped and Simon was shifted to this card instead. This change may not present many benefits to Simon, but this is an opportunity for him to shine when fight fans are excited that competition is returning.
Ricky Simon is climbing toward a UFC ranking
Simon is competing at a time when the bantamweight division has suddenly exploded into one of the most competitive divisions in the promotion. Petr Yan sits atop the division, but new contenders are rising on a monthly basis, giving him and other top contenders numerous names to fight. Simon can be one of those individuals. Right now, Simon isn’t ranked in the Top 15 in the division. His record doesn’t stand out when compared to his peers, but he does have a submission victory over Merab Dvalishvili, who is surging at 135-pounds.
If he can pick up a highlight-reel victory, then he will remind everyone that he should be among the top-15 in the division and is a threat to climb higher.
