Sergio Ramos will go down as the best defender of his generation, says outcast Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil amid transfer speculation linking the Real Madrid man to Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
Ramos, 34, is said to be edging towards the exit door in the Spanish capital after 16 successful years with Real.
The World Cup and European Championships winner has been elected to the FIFA World Team of the Year eight times across his illustrious career and has on five separate occasions been named as La Liga’s best defender.
He has picked up an incredible 178 caps for his nation and has won the Champions League four times.
But now he has been linked with a move to England with Tottenham Hotspur are Manchester United both said to be interested.
Both clubs are said to be keen on landing a central defender this summer with Spurs boss Jose Mourinho having spent three years of his career working with Ramos at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Incredibly, the defender shows no sign of slowing down and has played 17 times already this season as he looks to continue his trend of making 30 plus outings in every season since 2004-05.
Speaking about his former colleague, Ozil took to Twitter to said: “Yes, he’s been world-class for over a decade – and what a leader he has become.”
He added: “His ambition and will to win is amazing. I would say he’s the world’s best defender from my generation.”
Last week, manager Zinedine Zidane admitted that Ramos could leave, unsure whether the defender would extend his contract with the club.
That would see him exit the club in similar vain to Cristiano Ronaldo who left Madrid last summer to join Italian giants Juventus.
“Are we going to have a Cristiano case? I don’t know what will happen with Ramos,” he told reporters in Spain.
“He is here with us at the moment and we’re just focused on the [next] game.”

Speaking recently about his future, Ramos said: “I have a contract until 2022. So I’m not going to ask for anything.
“I’m going to keep working. I’m happy to be at this great club. I’m lucky to say I’m at the best club in the world. I just hope that the players can stay and that we can keep working with them.
“When a player wants to stay that means a lot. With Sergio Ramos, I see him staying for many years.
“He’s looking after himself well and I’m not surprised about what he’s achieving.”
